In May, Embark came out with several new tests for genes both good and bad involved in copper toxicosis. This will have a large impact on Lab and Doberman breeders, as well as people looking for puppies with longevity. The labradoodle above is an example of a puppy with no copper accumulating genes (bad) and two copies of an copper toxicosis attenuating gene (a good gene). It is nice to know that as veterinary medicine advances, so will the longevity of our dogs.
In lieu of buying a pup bred to avoid genetic diseases, such as hip dysplasia, you can adopt a puppy from a rescue, such as Hope Animal Rescue. There are tons of cute dogs, and mixes often have the best odds of a long life. Check out their website.
Another option when looking for a puppy, is becoming a guardian home for a puppy or two. This is providing a home for a genetically valuable dog that the breeder doesn't have the time or space to devote to another dog. It is a way to have a healthy, long-lived dog without the hassles of owning him or her or the investment it takes to acquire a puppy. You can email trinitydoodlepups@gmail.com if you would like to become a guardian to a puppy or two.
