Hello, all! It’s Gretchen here again. February brings us Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, and most importantly, Super Bowl Sunday! My family’s first and second favorite teams made it to the Super Bowl, so we are very excited to watch the game.
But, I don’t watch all the pregame hype leading up to kickoff. I watch another football game, the cutest football game ever played, the Puppy Bowl! Animal Planet has been airing the Puppy Bowl since 2005 during the afternoon before the big game. The puppies “play football”, there’s a referee, cheerleaders, reporters, and a lot of silly animal puns in the dialogue, like “Bark Purdy” and “Patrick Mabones”. It’s puppies and football, which are two of my very favorite things, and it helps rescue and shelter pets get adopted. That’s a win in my book.
The last four dogs I’ve adopted were shelter or rescue dogs, three of which were purebred boxers. They have been some of the best dogs I’ve ever had, even though they didn’t have such a great start in life. You can find all kinds of animals in a shelter or rescue, even birds, exotics and farm animals. If you’re looking for a certain breed, there are breed specific rescues out there, and shelters often take in purebreds as well. And don’t forget about mixed breeds, there are some wonderful, very interesting mixes out there. What all of these animals have in common is that they need someone to give them a second chance. In my experience, adopting a shelter or rescue dog has been one of the most rewarding things I have done in my life. During the month that celebrates Valentine’s Day, you can most certainly find love by giving a shelter or rescue animal a forever home.
